Plans to extend the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail from Niles to Berrien Springs were met with mostly positive remarks at a Tuesday afternoon open house. More than 30 people attended the event.

Community invited to give input on a proposed trail between Niles, Berrien Springs
The proposed trail between Niles and Berrien Springs would be an extension of the existing Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail that currently routes from Plym Park in the city of Niles to Mishawaka. The proposed 9-mile extension would bring the total trail mileage to just over 40 miles.

Bring your bike to each of South Bend’s First Fridays now through September for easy, family-friendly group rides of 5-6 miles that will tour the downtown along its Smart Streets paths and bike lanes. Each ride will have a guide. You can stop along the way to join other First Friday activities or come back to them later.

It’s a place where people are used to stopping in to get chips, pop and other snacks that are tasty but not particularly healthy. But now, thanks to assistance from Be Healthy Berrien and other organizations, the Covert Citgo station on M-140 has become part of the Healthy Corner Stores project and a shop where customers can pick up fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables at an affordable price.

Trail between Niles, Berrien Springs taking shape
As currently envisioned, the trail will run north from Plym Park on the north side of Niles, to Berrien Springs along the old interurban right-of-way. Most of that right-of-way is now owned by American Electric Power and is parallel to and west of M-139, headed toward Berrien Springs.
