SNAP Benefit Reductions: A Call to Action for Southwest Michigan
The reduction in SNAP benefits is having a significant impact, not only on recipients, but also on the local agencies and food assistance organizations that support them. This disruption highlights the vital role SNAP plays in ensuring food security and economic stability across Southwest Michigan.
A coordinated community response is essential to protect our most vulnerable neighbors: children, older adults, people with disabilities, and working families.
Food pantries are already seeing a surge in demand, and while local organizations are stepping up, resources are stretched thin.
Here’s how you can help:
- Share this message with your community
- Volunteer your time
- Support local food pantries
- Donate to strengthen our collective response

Community Leadership in Action
For the past 7 weeks, residents from across Benton Harbor have come together through the Community Leadership Academy, a 10-week pilot program focused on exploring structural determinants of health, the built environment, civic leadership, and the power of learning and collaboration.
Each week, participants showed up with purpose, engaging in workshops, leadership development, community health strategies, data-driven learning, and community-building activities. Their dedication is shaping a stronger, healthier future for their neighborhoods.
With just 3 weeks to go, the journey continues as participants begin designing and launching their own community leadership project, putting their learning into action to create real impact.
A huge shout out to the participants! Thank you for your strength, your spirit, and your leadership! We’re proud to walk alongside you as you lead the way toward lasting change.
