Southwest Michigan has a strong agricultural legacy, with local farmers playing a vital role in feeding communities, supporting the economy, and shaping the region’s identity. The Benton Harbor Fruit Market (BHFM) has long been part of that system, connecting growers and buyers. A regional feasibility study is now underway to explore the potential for a year-round local produce marketplace at BHFM. This effort is focused on exploring possibilities and better understanding of what may be feasible.
The study is assessing whether a more connected, farmer-centered model could strengthen the local food system by supporting farmers and improving access to fresh, locally grown food for residents across Southwest Michigan.
This effort is led by United Way of Southwest Michigan / Be Healthy Berrien in partnership with the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission. It is made possible through funding from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and is expected to be completed in Q1 2027. SBG Health Strategies is also acknowledged for its role in securing the award.
It is supported by regional and state partners, including the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), Michigan State University Extension and the Center for Regional Food Systems, and the Kalamazoo Valley Food Innovation Center.

Agricultural expertise and farmer insight are provided by Dad’s Farm Market and Molter Produce, helping ensure the study reflects real-world conditions.
